The Week 5 Buccaneers-Falcons game saw a disputable moment that made a lot of buzz around. The referee flagged a huge penalty during one play when Grady Jarrett slammed Tom Brady into the field. It had the QB in a scary situation that could cause physical damage. Many thought that the officials made the call with the Tua Tagovailoa incident in light. But the official’s statement suggests something else.

Tom Brady took the snap and looked upon the field for an open player. DT Grady Jarrett sneaked past the offensive line and got a shot at the QB. He dragged TB12 down and flipped him over, making it look like a clean sack. However, head referee Jerome Boger flagged Jarrett for roughing the quarterback. He decided following a brief talk with his team.

The media surrounded Jerome Boger to get some answers to the contentious penalty call. Greg Auman asked about the third-down penalty as a measure to avoid more such actions considering the Dolphins’ QB1 incident. Ref Boger mentioned, “No, not necessarily.”

However, Jerome Boger gave some clarity on why he flagged Grady Jarrett. He said that the DT’s way of dragging Tom Brady toward the ground was an unnecessary part of the encounter.

To give out context, NFL’s Rule 12, Article 11 (b) mentioned that when sacking a quarterback in a vulnerable stance (e.g., during or immediately after making a pass), a defensive player cannot bring him down unfairly or ruthlessly. Probably, the head official found Jarrett in violation of the protocol.

Tom Brady reacts to the controversial penalty call

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were able to pull a comeback win after the disputable ‘roughing the passer’ penalty. It must have struck a nerve on the Falcons and their fanbase, as the team looked dominating during the game. However, the flag led all their winning hopes to dust, as the Bucs won by 21-15 on Sunday. During the post-game press conference, the reporters asked about the penalty that sealed their win. The QB elaborated little and kept his thoughts in just four words. He mentioned, “I don’t throw flags.”

It is safe to say that the outcome may have been unique if it wasn’t for the penalty. After the Week 5 win, Brady and the Buccaneers are standing 3-2 and march into next Sunday’s showdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
