For Ravens fans, the news of Jackson’s contract is cause for celebration. The 2019 season MVP has been an important member of the team since his hiring in 2018, helping them win two playoff games and the AFC North Division title. However, not everyone is pleased with this announcement. Some fans and analysts have questioned whether Jackson, who is known for his running ability as well as his passing, deserves that kind of money. They argue that he should be paid as a running back instead.

The Ravens and Jackson had been at an impasse for months, with Jackson reportedly seeking a fully guaranteed contract. His non-exclusive franchise tag was applied by the organization in March, giving the parties until July 17 to come to an agreement. The agreement includes a remarkable $185 million in guaranteed cash, which is far more than Jackson’s original asking price of $230 million. Jackson expressed his relief that the discussions were ended in a video broadcast to the Ravens’ Twitter account, “We’ve agreed in principle on a 5-year contract extension with QB @Lj_era8

It’s worth noting that Jackson represented himself during these talks which ended just ten days after Jalen Hurts signed his own five-year extension with the Eagles for $255 million and an impressive $180 million guaranteed. The Ravens’ decision to select star receiver Zay Flowers instead of a quarterback in the first round of the NFL draft also showed their commitment to Jackson.
