When Deion Sanders took over as the head coach of the University of Colorado in December last year, there was a sense of expectation, both in terms of impact and results. With his arrival, the mood and energy amongst the Colorado football fans and young players shot to an all-time high. The two-time Super Bowl champion didn’t just join the Colorado Buffaloes for a paycheck – he was there to stir things up.

The 56-year-old intended to bring about changes and not settle for compromises. His consistent efforts are showing fruitful results. The process to make Colorado one of the strongest football contenders has well and truly begun. Sanders, popularly known as Coach Prime, recently had a special visitor at his Colorado facility to witness the ‘Grand Experiment’ from close quarters.

3-time national champion head coach Urban Meyer knows a thing or two about coaching football teams. The former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach is well aware of Deion Sanders’ habit of leaving nothing to chance and ensuring rightful experimentation to achieve desired results. In an interview with Colin Murray Cowherd on his YouTube channel, Meyer revealed that he was on the road with Sanders for a couple of days in Colorado and also gave insights on the grand experiment he is up to with the young school talent.

“I went to the meetings and watched the practice. They have, I believe, 70 new players. So, I call this thing the grand experiment. That was not what I expected. You know, I didn’t know what to expect. But I saw a very good team. I saw talented players,” Meyer said.

The larger the pool of players, the better it is for someone like Sanders to pick from. This also means that the players will have an equal opportunity to impress the former Super Bowl Champion and take the next step in their football careers.

Sanders’ experimentation to hand opportunity to as many players as possible in Colorado only means that the team is full of players selected on the basis of merit who are likely to know their roles to perfection. Smart strategy comes from experience, and with Sanders, there is no shortage there.

Meyer further spoke about Sanders’ masterstroke. He credited Sanders for hiring excellent assistant coaches, who, according to him, are the most underrated people in football. The former Ohio and Florida State coach was in awe of talented players like Travis Hunter, whom he compared to Percy Harvin.

Other than comparisons, Meyer also gave his prediction for Sanders and his boys going into the college football season. The sacked NFL coach believes that Colorado will make some waves in the Pac-12, but on one condition: “The thing they’re lacking is depth. If they can stay healthy and they have a tough schedule, they’re going to make some waves in the Pac 12,” Meyer added.

Deion Sanders’ association with Colorado means the beginning of a new era in college football. With his reputation, the NFL Hall of Famer brings a lot of expectations to deliver results for the Buffaloes.

Can Sanders convert promise into results?

After a successful two-season stint with Jackson State, where he registered an impressive 23-3 record, Deion Sanders comes into the Buffaloes fold with a poor season behind him. Colorado managed to secure just one win out of the eleven matches played last year, something that only makes life more difficult for the NFL legend.

The path ahead isn’t an easy one for Sanders. However, challenges are nothing new for the 56-year-old. First as a player and later as a coach, Deion Sanders has been written off multiple times during his career. With Colorado, Sanders is expected to convert a set of talented individuals to work as a team and deliver results.

From raising money to pay for the Colorado staff to prepare for the annual intrasquad spring game in April, Sanders is trying to do everything possible to get the Buffaloes back on track.

Sanders has also been called a cheerleader by fans in the past, but the man goes about his business like a true professional. It seems nothing deters or fazes him. However, his subtle response does catch a lot of attention and serves as motivation for his players.

There is a lot riding on Sanders. The Buffaloes kick off their college football season when they take on the TCU Horned Frogs on September 2 at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas. This will also be Sanders’ maiden game as the head coach of the Colorado outfit.
