If the 49ers are forced to keep Garoppolo, then their salary cap is going to take a massive hit. Jimmy G has a base salary of $24.2 million for the next season. That is a lot of money for a quarterback that will act as a backup to Trey Lance.

According to a report, if the 49ers aren’t able to part ways with Garoppolo by August 30th, then $27 million will be counted toward their salary cap. Moreover, the 49ers will see a $1.4 million dead cap hit if they decide to cut Garoppolo.

If a team decides to trade for Garoppolo, then the San Francisco 49ers will be expected to save some of his salary as well. As a result, the desperation to find suitors for Garoppolo is quite high at the moment.

The 49ers are completely sold on Trey Lance. They gave up a lot to get him in last year’s draft, which is why they don’t want to waste another year. Even though Lance is unproven, he has all the assets required to become a star in the league.

Which are the likely destinations for Jimmy Garoppolo?

With the Carolina Panthers trading for Baker Mayfield, Garoppolo is unlikely to end up there. The possible teams where Jimmy G could end up are likely to be the Seattle Seahawks or the New York Giants.

The Seahawks might look to bring in Garoppolo as a stop-gap quarterback before hitting it big in next year’s draft. There is talent on their roster, but without a winning quarterback, that will go to waste. On the other hand, Daniel Jones hasn’t been good for the Giants so far in his career.

There is a possibility that the Giants might trade for Garoppolo if Jones doesn’t start the season well. They have the option to get him in the next offseason as well, but it will all depend on the performance of Daniel Jones.
