Smith has truly earned it by performing at the time of the franchise’s greatest need. He stepped up to take the reins after Wilson went to the Denver Broncos and took the team through a decent season.

The man of the hour

When Russell Wilson left the Seahawks last off-season, almost everyone wrote them off. But Geno Smith rose at the time when the franchise most needed it. And he guided the team to a decent 9-8 finish in the NFC West.

The QB won the Comeback Player of the Year for his performance in the regular season. Although the Seahawks lost the NFC wildcard round to divisional rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, Smith had already made his case for an extension for the next season. He was eighth-best in passing yards in the regular season. The opposing defenses intercepted just 11 of his 572 pass attempts.

The Seahawks have now put faith in the 32-year-old for the next three years. But Smith is eyeing a run in the NFL which only a few have made. Will he be successful?
