After 15 seasons the New Orleans Saints will have a quarterback starting under center in Week 1 who doesn’t go by the name of Drew Brees. Saints Head Coach Sean Payton and Brees played an instrumental role in turning around the side’s fortunes and guiding them to their first Super Bowl in franchise history.

But with Drew Brees now retired, the Saints must move on. With big shoes to fill, the Saints have two QBs vying for the starting job. Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill.

Both got their chances last season when Drew Brees was out injured and both were equally impressive on certain occasions. With the side yet to name their starter, Sean Payton talked about the franchise’s direction after Brees and how he expects the side to overcome the void.

Sean Payton believes New Orleans Saints are up for the task

Speaking to NFL Total Access, Sean Payton said the QB competition is in full swing at New Orleans and that he believes both are ready to live up to the challenge.

“I think both of the players we’re talking about have had the benefit of training. Being in meeting rooms with him and seeing the daily grind,” Payton said. “Obviously, there’s a high bar for our team… And I think both of those guys will rise to the challenge.”

The void left by the retirement of their leader Drew Brees is huge. But Payton feels the onus is on everyone to pick up their socks and deliver their very best once the new season comes around.

“Replacing someone like Drew and the career he’s had, it really falls on all of us. It falls on the coaches, it falls on the other players. And we look forward to really having a good training camp.”

Apart from the QB headache, the Saints have one of the best rosters in the NFC. With talents like Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas and Cameron Jordan at their disposal, the side has the ability to make a deep run in the playoffs.
