This brought significant scrutiny to Colin Kaepernick‘s hairstyles and other aspects of his personal life.

Over time, Kaepernick has experimented with different styles, from a low buzz cut to the iconic Afro that symbolized black pride and resistance to police brutality in the 60s and 70s. Another style statement he made was with braids, giving them a modern twist with cornrows. Little did fans know that this cornrow hairstyle carries an old and significant story with it.

Kap embraced a friend’s idea despite the opposition by his adoptive parents
In his comical book, the former 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick shared an exciting story of how he came up with the idea of cornrows. Back in eighth grade, he approached his friend Ryan during school and asked, “Hey, so…I was wondering… where did you get your hair done like that?” His friend asked, “What, you mean cornrows?” Kap quickly responded, “Yeah cornrows.”

His friend examined his hair and suggested, “My brother has a friend. She can hook you up. But you gotta grow it out first, about three inches should get you right.” Although Kap was thrilled about the idea, his adoptive parents were against it. Despite their request for a haircut, Kap was determined to grow his hair three inches and later he got his favorite hairstyle – cornrows.

Kap returns via a virtual version of football!
Colin Kaepernick is set to make a virtual comeback to the NFL field in Saber Interactive’s latest arcade-style sports game, Wild Card Football. Releasing on October 10th, the game will feature Kaepernick alongside a star-studded roster of over 100 athletes.
