This year’s ceremony had a special touch when the Buffalo Bills safety made his way out to the center stage and delivered a heartfelt speech among the ones who helped him heal and bring him back to living.

This year’s NFL Honors at Symphony Hall, Arizona, recognized the first responders to Damar Hamlin after his cardiac arrest. The Bills and Bengals’ athletic and medical teams and some UCMC staff graced the stage after they aired a tribute video for them. They received acclaim and recognition for helping to bring an athlete back to life.

Buffalo Bills’ Safety Damar Hamlin appeared on the stage and delivered a heartfelt speech. He said, “Sudden cardiac arrest was nothing I would have ever chosen to be a part of my story, but that’s because sometimes our own visions are too small even when we think we are seeing the bigger picture. My vision was about playing in the NFL and being the best player that I could be, but God’s plan was to have a purpose greater than any game in this world.”

Hamlin also addressed his hospital experience and thanked an ICU doctor named Yusef. He assisted D. Ham during his stay in the hospital and told him he had experienced something similar. It had an enormous significance for the athlete. He ended his note by saying, “The journey will continue.”

As per ESPN, ahead of his Thursday appearance, Damar Hamlin received the NFLPA Alan Page Community Award on Wednesday. He took the stage with his parents and received the trophy.
