Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs seem to be on their promised path to yet another AFC Championship. Former defensive coordinator for Super Bowl XXXV champions Baltimore Ravens, Mike Smith had high words of praise for Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. However, Smith thinks the Kansas defense has to step up to match the offensive efficiency. The Chiefs’ offense and passing are the best in the league while the defense ranks 16th in the NFL this season.

Smith puts the Chiefs as favorites to win the Super Bowl because of Patrick Mahomes’ MVP-caliber quarterbacking and Andy Reid’s offensive play calling. “Without a doubt some of the most creative, toughest to defend in the history of the NFL. And [Reid] makes it fun. The things he does on third down. The things he does in the red zone. He comes up with some kind of play that you haven’t scouted. That’s for darn sure,” the former Atlanta Falcons HC said.

Kansas defense is not good enough for Patrick Mahomes to win a second Super Bowl ring

The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Los Angeles Chargers 30-27 at the SoFi stadium on SNF. Warrior Chief Patrick Mahomes threw three touchdowns over 329 yards and helped tight end Travis Kelce get a hat-trick of receiving TDs. Kelce also broke Rob Gronkowski’s record with his 33rd 100-yard-plus receiving game as a tight end. “Hard to game plan for and when you got that athletic quarterback that’s having another MVP season, they’re gonna be tough to beat,” Mike Smith said.

However, according to Smith, the Chiefs still have ways to go on the defensive side. “It’s not as consistent as it needs to be,” Smith said. Mike Smith spoke highly of defensive linemen Chris Jones and Carlos Dunlap and their impressive pass rushing. However, he still thinks the defensive rankings need to improve for a Super Bowl for Mahomes and Co.
