Former Cowboys head coach Jimmy Johnson and owner Jerry Jones share a tumultuous relationship. This is no secret to the NFL community. And as time goes on, fans get more stories from both sides that make this relationship between the two so special.

 

Jimmy Johnson was the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys from 1989 to 1994. During that time with America’s Team, Johnson took a forgotten Cowboys franchise to former glory. Jimmy won back-to-back super bowls with the Dallas Cowboys. However, Jimmy isn’t the only one who should get all the credit.

Dallas Cowboys owner, President and GM Jerry Jones took over the franchise in 1989 and enjoyed the highest level of football success in his early years. Jerry and Jimmy’s unstoppable Cowboys won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1993 and 1994. Johnson and Jones dominated the Buffalo Bills both years with the help of stars like Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders and Emmitt Smith. However, since then, the next quarter of a century has been quite underwhelming for the Cowboys.

Many think this downward spiral for the Cowboys started when the owner and the head coach developed a dislike for each other over the years. Jimmy Johnson detailed the start of his feud with the billionaire owner in an interview with WFAA during the promotional launch tour of his new book ‘Swagger: Super Bowls, Brass Balls, and Footballs.’

What led to the ultimate fallout between Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson?

Back-to-back Super Bowl-winning coaches don’t just get up and leave their franchise out of their own goodwill. That’s why the entire NFL community was shocked when Jimmy Johnson announced his resignation from the Cowboys head coach position in 1994.

In the WFAA interview, Jimmy details the exact Jerry Jones moment that caused him to leave Dallas. Owner Jerry Jones was not happy that HC Jimmy Johnson picks up all the credit for the wins and the championships at Dallas. Jerry didn’t like that he could be making millions for the franchise, but Johnson would still be in the headlines because he traded for the right player. “I want some of that fun,” Jerry had said, according to Johnson’s interview.

Jones also once declared that he could find another 500 coaches that can win him the Super Bowl. And Jimmy Johnson didn’t take this disrespectful comment lightly. He said that this was the last nail in the coffin of their relationship. “For him to say that and he apologized the next day but that cut pretty deep,” Johnson said.
