While the whole of the United States celebrates the 4th of July as its Independence Day, there is another tradition that has been followed for years. And it is the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. The legend of the competition’s origin story states that it all started back on 4th July 1916, when four European immigrants were arguing about who is more American in nature amongst them. And they decided to find out by eating as many hotdogs as possible in 10 minutes. And ever since, it attracts hordes of fans across the US, dubbing it the ‘Olympics of Competitive Eating’.
For the past 15 years, Joey ‘Jaws’ Chestnut has been the undisputable champion of the competition, holding a record of eating 76 hotdogs in 10 minutes. And even this year, he was at the forefront of holding the competition despite the weather becoming a hindrance. And this led to ex-NFL star Pat McAfee giving him an elite introduction to his show, the Pat McAfee Show.

PatMcAfee introduces Joey Chestnut with style
In a recent episode of the show, McAfee and company talked about how Joey Chestnut did his best to ensure that this year’s Nathan’s Hotdog Eating Competition takes place despite rain pouring down in Coney Island. Chestnut was to be a part of the episode to discuss the event and its aftermath on him emotionally and physically.
Before getting in touch with the winner, McAfee gave a detailed description of the events that led to the competition coming back from the clutches of being canceled. McAfee talked about how even he pondered why the organizing committee did not have a ‘backup plan’ for such circumstances. He then went on to shed light on how Joey Chestnut saved the day for the beloved national competition. McAfee said, “So the rain came and the rain slowed down. At the point it has already been canceled. Joey f***ing Jaw Chestnut comes out and says we’re doing this f***er. They canceled the show that was supposed to take the place. ESPN fires it right back up on after Sports Center and this guy shows up.”
And amidst hazy weather and the competition being fired back up, the 15 times consecutive champion went on to clinch his 16th win in the ‘Olympics of Competitive Eating.’

After playing an important role in reviving lost hopes this 4th of July, Joey Chestnut went on to win the coveted mustard-yellow belt for the 16th consecutive time. While thousands were present in Coney Island to witness the coveted event, the rain and thunderstorm led to them scattering and seeking shelter. After almost two hours of delay, the men’s category began at around 2 pm, with Chestnut coming first eating 62 hot dogs in 10 minutes. On the other hand, Miki Sudo won her 9th consecutive title, downing 9.5 hot dogs in 10 minutes in the women’s category.
