Addressing the situation, Pat McAfee remarked, “I think they’re scared to get him banged up too much because he’s a franchise quarterback.

He added: “It’s like if he’s a franchise quarterback that never plays to his peak, because you’re not using what his peak is because you’re scared… I think that’s a bad business decision too.

McAfee said this could lead to sacrificing an actual career in search of a perfect career. And that perfect career may not even materialize if teams don’t use the players’ biggest strengths, fearing avoid injuries.

He added that if this strategy persists, players like Anthony Richardson and Jonathan Taylor may not have careers spanning a decade or more. That their peak performance window would close prematurely.

For McAfee, this represents a suboptimal business strategy. His criticism of coaches and teams’ protective tactics followed a divergent trajectory taken by quarterback Richardson and running back Taylor.

Colts’ star players going in different directions?

Quarterback Anthony Richardson and running back Jonathan Taylor are taking contrasting paths. Richardson has been named the regular-season starting quarterback, showcasing the Colts’ prioritization of his potential despite his learning curve. On the other hand, Taylor’s situation is uncertain; despite not being traded, he remains on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list and might miss the early games. Conversely, the Colts’ decision to designate Richardson as their regular-season starting quarterback on August 15 wasn’t unexpected.

While Richardson might not necessarily be the Colts’ best bet to secure a victory in Week 1, the team demonstrated its commitment to his high potential. Their perspective focuses on what they can achieve in the coming years rather than solely in the upcoming months.

This stance led the Colts to opt for the opening-day assignment for Richardson, despite the presence of experienced veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew. Minshew is familiar with head coach Shane Steichen’s scheme.
