The Kyle Shanahan-led San Francisco 49ers were plagued with multiple injury setbacks in their Week Two win over the New York Jets. The Niners lost Nick Bosa to an ACL injury. They were also hit with injuries to Raheem Mostert and starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

The latter suffered a high ankle strain at the MetLife Stadium, which ruled him out for the Week Three clash against New York Giants. Backup quarterback, Nick Mullens, started for the Red and Gold on the weekend.

He put in a commanding display with 343 passing yards and one passing touchdown. This sparked rumors that Mullens could be in line to replace Jimmy Garoppolo as the first-choice starter. However, Shanahan does not feel that is the case.

“No, that scenario doesn’t exist, but I don’t think past one game either. This is Jimmy’s team. He’s done a hell of a job for us and when he’s healthy, he’ll be playing again for us.

“He’s just got to be able to be healthy in terms of if he can run around and protect himself, make throws. Anytime you’re dealing with an ankle, you might feel all right when you’re standing there, but can you move around and get into the awkward positions without hurting yourself?

“That’s really what we’d have to see. It would be tough for us to see that and truly judge that if he didn’t get into practice,” Shanahan said via Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports.

The 49ers are preparing to take on the underperforming Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at the Levi’s Stadium. Shanahan is still sweating on the fitness of Jimmy G, George Kittle, and Raheem Mostert.
