The 2020 NFL season is over with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers being crowned the champions. Tom Brady and his Bucs defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in a lopsided affair in Super Bowl LV.

Buccaneers running back Leonard Fournette had a playoff run to remember. Fournette even scored a running touchdown in the Super Bowl.

In a season of historic feats for running backs such as Derrick Henry’s 2,000-yard run, a particular player beat everyone to the clock.

San Francisco 49ers have the fastest of the bunch

The San Francisco 49ers running back Raheem Mostert suffered a serious ankle injury which put him out for almost half of the 2020 season, but that didn’t stop him from being the single fastest ball carrier over the course of the season.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, the running back was the single fastest ball carrier in the NFL by clocking a top speed of 23.09 mph on a run to the endzone against the New York Jets.

The next run on the list is also a Mostert run where he hit 22.73 mph. Though he only registered only 2 touchdowns last season, he was the fastest on the field by quite a stretch.

San Francisco fans will hope that a fully fit Mostert will be able to have a bigger contribution to the 49ers offense in 2021.

This incidentally is the 3rd straight season where a 49ers running back has been the fastest ball carrier in the league. In 2018 and 2019, Matt Breida was the fastest player in the league.

The San Francisco 49ers had a rough 2020 season. Kyle Shanahan’s team finished bottom of the NFC West with a 6-10 record.

With quarterback struggles involving Jimmy Garoppolo amounting to their dismal form, the squad might have to rely more on their running game for 2021 if things aren’t sorted out soon.

Do you think the 49ers can have a better season in 2021 if they can sort out their quarterback woes in free agency?
