It’s been a long, long wait for Kansas City Chiefs to get their hands on the Super Bowl title. Patrick Mahomes pulled off a stunning comeback in 2019 against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV. The overcame a 10-20 deficit in the fourth quarter to land the Chiefs their first Lombardi Trophy since 1970.

The major credit behind for that is down to the work put in behind-the-scenes by head coach Andy Reid and GM Brett Veach. The Chiefs rewarded some of their standout performers from last season with big-money contracts in the offseason. Mahomes’ 10-year extension will see him earn north of $450 million ($500 including bonuses). The Clark Hunt-owned organization are now reportedly working on long-term deals with Reid and Veach as well.

“Yeah, it’s tough to imagine the Kansas City Chiefs offseason going any better. Locking up all their big-time stars for the foreseeable future. Patrick Mahomes, he got done, Chris Jones, he got done, Travis Kelce, he got done. Somehow the Chiefs were able to fit all of those under the salary cap.”

“They did another two big ones yesterday, doesn’t involve the salary cap, but equally or potentially even more important than any of those. Andy Reid, the head coach, who of course led them to the Super Bowl and Brett Veach the GM pulling the strings behind the scenes and making it all happen. Both of those guys are closing in on new six-year deals with the Kansas City Chiefs which will put them inside the building for the foreseeable future,” Rapoport said.

GM Brett Veach was instrumental in tying down the likes of Pat Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Chris Jones on contract extensions in the offseason. The Chiefs will hope to secure their long-term future in the league by holding on to Reid and Veach. It’s no secret that the Missouri-based franchise is aiming to emulate what Bill Belichick and Tom Brady did with New England Patriots in the last two decades. Time will tell if Chiefs co-owner Clark Hunt’s gamble pays off.
