“We Trusted Him”: Patrick Mahomes Denotes Why Chiefs TE Is a Vital Cog Despite Forced Fumble

The Kansas City Chiefs crashed their 5-game winning streak last night. Patrick Mahomes and his offense couldn’t match up to Joe Burrow’s Bengals, who edged past Kansas, coming from behind. Tight end Travis Kelce allowed a forced fumble at a crucial point in the game. And Mahomes addressed it in the post game press conference.
The Chiefs quarterback has utmost faith in his tight end, Travis Kelce, and doesn’t want to change his opinion based on the result of one play. According to Mahomes, it’s this competitor nature of Kelce that wins them most games. Unfortunately, Kelce couldn’t come to the rescue against Cincinnati when Bengals linebacker Germaine Pratt forced a fumble and turnover on no. 87.

However, this minor hiccup on the road to the championship doesn’t bother Patrick Mahomes in the least. The youngest NFL regular season and Super Bowl MVP displayed untainted faith in Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce’s ability to win games. “They stripped the ball out, right at the very end there. But I’m taking Travis fighting for extra yards every single time. Because that’s the type of competitor he is,” Mahomes said.

Mahomes and Co. were up 24-20 in the 4th quarter when the Kelce fumble happened. On a 2nd-and-8 play, Patrick Mahomes threw a 10-yard pass to his dependable tight end. Kelce got his first down, but was unable to keep the ball in his control. Germaine Pratt got the possession for the Bengals after Kelce thought the ref’s whistle had already stopped the game.
Travis Kelce recently surpassed legendary New England Patriots and Tampa Bay tight end, Rob Gronkowski with his 33rd 100-yard game as a tight end. Kelce also leads the NFL this season in receiving touchdowns ahead of former Chiefs teammate Tyreek Hill. And Patrick Mahomes thinks Kelce’s hunger makes him a big game player. “We trusted him. He’s a competitor. He’s gonna go down fighting and we’re gonna keep giving him chances to make plays,” the QB said.

The Cincinnati Bengals beat the Kansas City Chiefs 27-24. Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase returned from injury in the victory against a Kansas defense that ranks 15th in the league. QB Joe Burrow threw with an 80.4% accuracy over 286 yards with 2 touchdowns, while Patrick Mahomes could only manage 1 TD over 223 yards with a 59% pass completion rate. The 9-3 Chiefs will look to bounce back from this loss next Sunday when they face Russell Wilson and the 3-9 Denver Broncos.
