The NFL is constantly looking to improve. The end goal is to provide fans with an exhilarating viewing experience while maintaining a high-end competitive drive. However, over the years, the game has changed, from tactics to rules, everything is evolving and so have the precautionary measures to protect players. In light of these instances, the NFL recently tweaked its playbook, but not everyone is on board, especially some big-time coaches.

The NFL has been constantly trying to minimize injuries, and the Damar Hamin incident certainly emphasized the need to do so. In an attempt to keep collisions and head injuries to a minimum, the NFL has taken a page out of Dwayne Johnson’s XFL, and only time will tell if its implementation is the solution.

On Tuesday, NFL owners voted on a rule change. The NFL has tweaked its kickoff rule, allowing players to fair catch with the following possession beginning at the team’s own 25-yard line. The rule is only supposed to be in action for a year, and maybe the NFL will extend the tenure further. Over the years, the kickoff rule has undergone a few transitions, all going back to the safety of the players as the primary concern.

However, several prominent coaches have opposed the rule in the past few days. The Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs head coach, Andy Reid, is one of the few not too happy with the new rule.

Reid felt that the NFL is stripping the game of certain plays, and maybe the league could transform into flag football. Joining Andy Reid, Ravens coach John Harbaugh also voiced his displeasure.

The fair catch rule, we had a chance to weigh in on that with all the special teams coaches, We had a long talk and discussion about that. We weren’t for it. We voted against it. We think it’s going to create more high-speed head trauma than not having it in there. That’s our position on it. But we’ll see,” expressed Harbaugh.

Having spent a chunk of his coaching career as a special teams coordinator, Harbaugh has the utmost authority backed by years of experience and believes that there were ” better ideas“, but for now the NFL is following in Dwayne Johnson’s blueprint.

Another rule change

The kickoff rule isn’t the first one to be changed for the upcoming season. Earlier the NFL made changes to their scheduling laws, allowing teams to appear in multiple Thursday Night Football games in the same season. Ironically the rule is said to compromise players’ safety as a couple of days of preparation would be hardly sufficient.

Needless to say, the rule change was highly unpopular among NFL players, and the Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes took charge with this one. Mahomes took to Twitter, to express his disappointment with the change, and rightfully so.

The teams forced to play multiple Thursday Night Football games would be extremely upset with the scheduling. However, the NFL seems to be reiterating its playbook and maybe different renditions are bound to follow.
