The Bengals’ Million-Dollar Questions: Burrow, Higgins, and Championships

Joe Burrow just rocketed to the top of the NFL’s financial ladder, securing his throne as the highest-paid player in the league. How? He just penned a massive five-year contract extension with the Cincinnati Bengals, and it’s a mind-blowing $275 million deal! The 2020 NFL draft’s first overall pick, Burrow, still had a couple of rookie contract years up his sleeve, but the Bengals weren’t taking any chances. They’ve just inked a deal to keep him in Cincinnati for the long haul. Burrow’s already led the Bengals on a thrilling ride to the AFC Championship Game last year and even flirted with the Super Bowl the year before. Cincinnati is still hunting for that elusive Lombardi Trophy, but they’ve got a rock-solid belief that Burrow’s the quarterback who can finally deliver it home.

As the Bengals gear up for their showdown with the Browns tomorrow, the team’s contract puzzle is getting more complex than ever. With Joe Burrow’s big extension and Ja’Marr Chase due for his, it seems like wide receiver Tee Higgins might be caught in the crossfire. Higgins finds himself caught in the midst of this pigskin contract puzzle. It’s fourth down for him as he enters the final year of his deal, with the front office playing tough defense.

The rumors are spiraling like a perfectly thrown spiral, leaving fans to wonder: What’s the playbook for Higgins’ future in the stripes?

Tee Higgins’ uncertain path: a last-minute Hail Mary?

Back in the not-so-distant past, the Bengals dished out a contract offer to the 24-year-old sensation. However, Higgins didn’t bite on the deal. Now, as the clock keeps ticking, if they can’t reach an agreement, Higgins might find himself sporting the franchise tag. Word on the NFL street is that this tag is projected to be worth a hefty $19.74 million post the 2023 season, as per Over The Cap. Unlike Burrow, the Bengals cannot exercise a fifth-year option on Higgins because he was selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Burrow wanted to draw up a deal that would ensure both Higgins and standout receiver Ja’Marr Chase in the franchise. But with the NFL imposing a strict salary cap, fitting the salaries of the three seems difficult.  It was even speculated that Higgins might be suiting up for a different team next year. Yet, as we huddle up right now, Tee’s route with the Bengals is as uncertain as a last-minute Hail Mary pass.
