It’s been a topsy-turvy offseason for Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots up until now. The Robert Kraft-owned franchise have been re-structuring since the exit of legendary NFL quarterback – Tom Brady. The six-time Super Bowl winner opted to end his 20-year association with the Patriots in hunt of fresh challenge in Florida.

However, that left coach Bill Belichick with a dilemma in the build-up to the 2020 season. Jarett Stidham, who played backup to Tom Brady since joining in 2019, was tipped to be the starting QB for the Patriots this season. However, the arrival of the flamboyant Cam Newton earlier this month has caused all sorts of chaos in New England.

Who will Bill Belichick entrust with the responsibility of replacing the great Tom Brady – Cam Newton or Jarett Stidham?

Cam Newton or Jarett Stidham – who will start for New England Patriots?

Jarett Stidham has featured in the NFL on just one occasion since joining the Patriots last year. The 133rd overall pick featured in Week three in 2019 against the Jets. He replaced Brady in the fourth quarter. Stidham attempted four passes but completed two. Brady returned as the Patriots eventually won by a 30-14 margin.

His stats from 2018 with Auburn are decent enough to prove he is capable of starting in the NFL. Stidham threw for 2,794 yards and made 18 TDs in his senior year. However, playing in the NFL is a whole different ball game. The Patriots will be careful before they thrust their young quarterback in the limelight to replace the mighty Tom Brady.

Cam Newton most likely to get the nod from Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels

Let’s take a look at veteran NFL quarterback – Cam Newton – now. The former 2015 NFL MVP arrived in New England after the end of his contract with Carolina Panthers. Newton’s last few years in the league have been underwhelming due to his foot and shoulder injuries. However, at 31, the former Auburn product has more to offer the NFL.

Belichick and Co. could be the perfect mentors that Cam needs at this point in his career. If he can replicate his form from five years ago and keep healthy, then the sky is the limit for New England Patriots this season. We predict that New England will take a gamble and use a fresh and motivated Cam Newton as their number one shot-caller when the NFL begins in September.

Auburn coach Guz Malzahn gave his opinion on the whole Cam Newton – Jarett Stidham dilemma.

“I think both of them could handle that without a problem. The thing about Cam is you’re talking about one of the better quarterbacks in NFL history already. He’s already proved that. With Jarrett, the fact that he was in the system for a year, that he learned under Tom, I know his mind-set.”

“He’s ready to take over himself. Either one of them is prepared, but Cam has already done it. They’re both competitors now; both of them are going to compete. It’ll be good competition, but I really expect it to be a real healthy quarterback room. If you’re New England, it’s a great situation,” Malzahn said via a telephone interview with Boston Globe.
