While the NFL franchises have officially begun with their training camps, some teams are still figuring out a potential starting quarterback for their side. Just ahead of the camps, the San Francisco 49ers confirmed that Trey Lance will be their starting quarterback, and the franchise has moved on from their long-time QB Jimmy Garoppolo. This news brings a ray of hope in the life of Colin Kaepernick, who is eagerly waiting to seal a backup position with an NFL team.
While speaking to the reporters ahead of the training camp, Niners coach Kyle Shanahan said, “We have moved on to Trey [Lance],” he said on Tuesday. “We think Jimmy would have been traded if the surgery didn’t happen. He needed to do it. There’s no ill will there at all,” he added.

Moreover, Shanahan explained the decision was not a result of an overnight discussion. Garoppolo was very well aware of the situation. Teams have to consider their future aspirations moving ahead, and this move was intended to offer Jimmy Garoppolo a better option.
“I think all three (Jimmy Garoppolo, Trey Lance, and Kyle Shanahan) of us are on the same page. Jimmy understands where we’re at. We understand where we’re at. I can’t tell you how appreciative I’ve been of Jimmy and what he did for us last year.” Shanahan explained the entire scenario inside the locker room.

However, this decision might prove beneficial for Kaepernick if the team wants a suitable backup for the youngster. Kaepernick has everything that it takes. His experience as a veteran once led the side towards a Super Bowl, and being the starting quarterback of the Niners a few years ago makes him a suitable candidate. However, it seems the franchise has other plans in mind.

With Jimmy Garoppolo’s permanent departure, a new path was cleared for Colin Kaepernick to make a comeback. And that too, alongside his previous NFL team. However, the Niners have recently signed Nate Sudfeld for the upcoming 2022 season. The 28-year-old is expected to fill the backup void for Trey Lance and was offered a $2 million deal for one year.

It seems the franchises are still afraid of the repercussions they would face signing Kaepernick into the roster. Recently, the athlete-turned-activist participated in a workout session with the Las Vegas Raiders.
