Raiders did not have the best season in 2022 with a 6-11 record and a 3rd place finish in their division. They were looking for a new QB while the 49ers wanted to replace an injured QB in Jimmy Garoppolo. It was a match made in heaven for all the parties involved but for Garoppolo’s injury. Taking his injury into concern, a special clause was added as an addendum to the deal.

Garoppolo will take his physical test on 23rd July to determine his participation this season. Well, the Raiders did cover themselves against the financial losses from the deal. But since the draft season is over, the question is who will be the QB for them this season?

In March 2023, the Raiders signed a deal worth $72.75 million for three years with Garoppolo. The deal assures $34 million to Jimmy and has clauses for preventive measures. His contract might be a bit complex due to the injury he sustained during the Week 13 game for the 49ers. Well, Garoppolo has attended many team meetings and activities this season with the Raiders. But he is yet to take part in the field yet, due to a foot injury.

In case Garoppolo misses this season due to the foot injury he sustained earlier (after playing a game), the $11.25 million signing bonus will convert to a base salary of $11.25 million for 2023. The contract will also be terminated then and there with the waiver. The waiver is voided if Garoppolo remains with the team till the final game of the new season. There will be no cost for the Raiders if Garoppolo fails the test.

What is Raiders Plan B?

Many feel that the Raiders were desperate and overpaid for a free agent who has not played many games last few seasons. They needed a QB this season and in desperation drove up the coast. However, with a passer rating of 103.0 last season with 16 TD and 4 Interceptions, he has proven himself.

Raiders parted ways with Derek Carr after a 9-year journey. They did not vouch much for Bryce Young or CJ Stroud, who were available for the draft. Carson Wentz, ex-Eagles QB, can be one of the options. Former NFL MVP Matt Ryan and Teddy Bridgewater are also some of the options. Some even consider Tom Brady to make a return considering his interest in purchasing a stake at the Raiders. Regardless, most options are moot and trading Andy Dalton from Panthers looks like a feasible option. Well, the Raiders do have Aidan O’Connell and Brian Hoyer as backup QB in the roaster.

The Raiders have only themselves to blame for their situation as Garoppolo’s injury was evident when the deal was made. They did cover themselves financially, but a lot depends upon luck now. Garoppolo also has a lot at stake. If he pushes himself too much, he might aggravate the injury to the extent of permanent disability.
