In an NFL preseason game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Green Bay Packers on August 26, 2016, Colin Kaepernick, then quarterback for the 49ers, made a quiet yet resounding statement. While the national anthem played, Kaepernick remained seated while his fellow players stood, sparking a controversy that would ripple through American sports and society for years to come. This act of Kaepernick accompanied both support and criticism from nationwide fans.

However, looking into Kaepernick’s NFL journey, it started when he was drafted by the 49ers in 2011, Kaepernick had gained recognition as a formidable running quarterback. However, it was during the summer of 2016, amidst a wave of police killings and social unrest, that he decided to sit during the national anthem. As the season progressed, Kaepernick transitioned from sitting to kneeling during the anthem, out of respect for the military, at the suggestion of a former NFL player and Green Beret.
