Maybe don’t ever have Baker wear orange again, it doesn’t matter what shade. Coming out of bye week, everything was looking great for the Bucs. From being 3-1 and at the top of their division to making the much-awaited cream sickle debut on the field, everything was lining up perfectly for Todd Bowles’s lead team until the Lions came to town and stomped them 20-6 giving Tampa fans flashback of 70s. Baker and that high-flying offense of Dave Canales was bottled up for an entire game.

In addition to this, Baker went without throwing a TD for the first time since arriving in Tampa.

Baker Mayfield, in his post-game conference, was brutally honest about his performance. “We sucked today.” “I sucked today.” No.6 didn’t try to sugarcoat anything about what went on the field. Bucs offense went 2-12 on 3rd down while Baker couldn’t complete more than 52% (season low) of his passes. Lions D stuffed up the middle erasing any sort of run game while daring Baker to win it with his arm. Unfortunately for Tampa, Baker didn’t wake up feeling dangerous and could just muster up 206 yards throwing the ball.

On a Wednesday presser, former No.1 overall vehemently denied when asked about the Dave Canales system asking too much from him in his 1st year. He firmly replied, “It just comes down to execution”. Furthermore, he had the back of his OC “I don’t think anybody is questioning the play-calling because those were good designs that they have had”. When talking about simplifying things, he added “it’s just doing little things right.” Moreover, he took the blame on himself and offense for not executing while showing his immense faith in the system.

Is Mayfield’s trust in the system valid?

To give a context, when Baker has a 94 or more passer rating, the Bucs win. Conversely, when Mayfield has a sub-75 passer rating, Buccaneers are 0-2. The Bucs’ offensive line has done a fine job of protecting the former Heisman winner (only sacked 5 times). Now, this also has something to do with Baker’s mobility but when called for (long pass plays), O-Line has delivered. The reason for concern is the run game which has failed to show up the whole season.

For example, not a single RB from Tampa’s running room has crossed 100 yards even once this season. This begs the question of whether the Canales’ run offense is relying too heavily on passing. Every good team needs a balanced attack to come out victorious and the Bucs are no different. Is this offense sustainable? Will Dave Canales bring a change?
