“He Kind of Messed up ” – Bears QB1 Justin Fields Sounds off on Chase Claypool as Chicago Looks to Offload the Troubled WR Amidst Rift With the Team

The Bears are in one of the most critical conditions that a team could be in. First, their defense started crumbling down with Alan Williams’ resignation, and now, they are facing problems with their offense. They are in the news for all the wrong reasons. Additionally, the luck is not favoring them since they lost all the regular season games. This is not their year at all, as they are getting mauled left and right. Now the team’s WR Chase Claypool is in some kind of trouble.
In the wake of all this turmoil, the WR recently made some comments about the Bears’ strategy which has led the Bears to seriously think about terminating his employment. Matt Eberflus might be scratching his head because the wall that he is trying to fix is beyond repair, for now.

Chicago Bears WR and the team are at a crossroads with each other. In a recent interview, Claypool was asked whether he was being used to the best of his abilities, to which he replied that he wasn’t. This became one of the reasons that the Bears decided to stick it to him and ordered watch from the sidelines. It was revealed that the Bears’ staff thinks that Claypool is not giving his 100% and has been unproductive. However, Justin Fields sides with the WR although he does think that Claypool was in the wrong when he made those statements.
“I think he knows that he kind of messed up by saying that, but I wish him nothing but the best,” said the Bears QB to the Chicago Sun-Times. A tweet from Courtney Cronin, the Bears Correspondent for ESPN sheds more light on the scene.

Here is the exchange with Chase Claypool on his belief he's not being utilized to showcase his strengths beginning with the 2 questions I asked. The assumption that quotes from players are cherrypicked is something I take offense to, so you can see it verbatim for yourself. pic.twitter.com/EdqTcTo9wT

Another thing to note here is that Claypool was told by the Bears to stay away from the Sunday game, while the HC Eberflus said that the WR chose to miss the game on his own accord. Eberflus’ statements were later put to rest by the Bears’ representatives. According to the Bears’ reps, Claypool’s absence from the Sunday game had nothing to do with the comments that he made. Now, it doesn’t make sense whether this is something personal against the WR or not.
This might have to do something with his performance, although the QB thinks otherwise, calling him a ‘talented player’.
The flipside of Chase Claypool
One thing is clear though, the Bears are looking to trade Chase Claypool the very first opportunity they get. One of the main reasons is the numbers he’s been putting up. They are not satisfying at all. In the last 10 games, he has made only 18 catches. On top of that, in the last three games, the WR has only made four catches. The Bears traded for Chase Claypool in the 2023 draft in exchange for the 32 overall pick to the Steelers.

Some of the Bears’ management thinks that this was a huge mistake. Now that everyone’s true feelings have come to the surface, the day might not be that far when the Bears decide to shove Claypool. As of now, the WR will let the Bears have their way with him and is willing to do whatever he is asked of. For Claypool, there is a silver lining here. His rookie contract with the Bears is ending in March, it’s a long stretch, but he will get there.
