 The XFL is back! The NFL’s biggest competitor is coming back for a new season, and it has its newest owner, Dwayne Johnson. It has some extra football for avid fans of the game.

The new season of XFL will feature eight teams, the names of which have been announced.

Dwayne Johnson revives the XFL

The biggest competitor of the NFL, the world’s most profitable sports league, is back for another season with former footballer, wrestling legend, and actor Dwayne Johnson, better known as ‘The Rock.’ The new 2023 season will kick off in February 2023 and will feature eight teams.

Three of the teams are the direct descendants of their 2020 counterparts. They are the D.C. Defenders, Houston Roughnecks, and St. Louis Battlehawks. Two others, namely the Arlington Renegades and Seattle Sea Dragons, have come back with minor tweaks. The Renegades were previously based in Dallas and the Sea Dragons were previously just the Dragons.

Two other teams have kept their monikers but changed the bases. They are the Orlando Guardians and the Vegas Vipers. The Guardians used to play out of New York whereas the Vipers were based in Tampa Bay during the 2020 season.

The only unique team to enter the XFL next season is the San Antonio Brahmas. The Brahmas in their name are derived from the Brahman Beef cattle.

What is the XFL?

The XFL is a professional football league in direct competition with the more famous NFL. It is an attempt to fill the void that the NFL offseason leaves for football fans in the United States.

The first season of this brand of XFL kicked off in 2020. At that time, WWE owner Vince McMahon was at the helm of affairs. The league saw a great start back then. But it was shut down due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic that hit humanity that year.

The brand is being revived by actor Dwayne Johnson, who himself was a football player once. His own brand and the XFL brand name will hope to attract an audience for the league when it kicks off in February 2023.

“(We) have a lot of NFL people, from the top all the way down that have been in the NFL, know what it takes,” the newly appointed Houston Roughnecks head coach Wade Phillips said

The draft for the league will take place in November 2022, and the first kickoff will be a week after the NFL Super Bowl.
