Novak Djokovic Adds a New Tournament After French Open 2020 Defeat

World No.1 Novak Djokovic has confirmed his participation at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, which is scheduled to start from October 24. This will be the Serbian’s first appearance at the Vienna Open since winning it in 2007.

Just yesterday, Djokovic suffered his worst Grand Slam final defeat as Rafael Nadal beat him in the 2020 French Open final. The Spaniard thoroughly dispatched Djokovic, who was looking to break Nadal’s dominance in Paris.

Now, as Djokovic looks ahead to other tournaments, his participation was confirmed by Erste Open through their Twitter handle. The last time Djokovic played in Vienna, he lifted the trophy, defeating Stan Wawrinka in the final back in 2007.

Back then, Novak Djokovic was the top seed at the event and defeated Stan Wawrinka for an easy straight-sets victory. However, now that the Vienna Open has attracted so many top players, it will be a challenge for Djokovic.

Vienna Open has accumulated one of the strongest draws for an ATP 500 tournament. The event will feature seven top 10 players including the likes of defending champion Dominic Thiem, Daniil Medvedev, French Open 2020 semifinalists Stefanos Tsitsipas and Diego Schwartzman, and many more.

The Vienna Open is an ATP 500 tournament and has been held annually since 1974. Needless to say, it is a tournament with a significant amount of history. Last year, Dominic Thiem became the third Austrian to win the Vienna Open. He had defeated Diego Schwartzman in three sets in the finals.

Due to the pandemic, most of the tournaments on the ATP calendar have been canceled. As a result, for the remainder of the 2020 season, only a handful of tournaments are left. For Djokovic, it is important to stay match fit as he will have his eyes set on the Paris Masters and the ATP Tour Finals scheduled later in November.
