The 34-year-old player stated, “Alexander Zverev had a tough year on/off the court. I know how much tennis helps me to grow & I’m happy that it was Sascha’s winning field this year. Novak Djokovic faced the German regularly in 2021

Prior to the finals, Djokovic faced Zverev in the semifinal of the ATP Finals 2021. In that match, it was the German player who prevailed and won the match in three close-fought sets. Before that, they faced each other in an intense match at the US Open, which was won by the Serb in five sets.

Reflecting on the season, Djokovic ended up winning the first three Majors of the season, tying him with rivals Federer and Nadal on 20 titles each. Sadly, he could not win the final at the US Open.
