World No. 1 Novak Djokovic had a scintillating start to his campaign at the French Open 2020. Djokovic annihilated Mikael Ymer in straight sets, handling Ymer a bagel in the opening set. The Serbian dropped only five games during his first-round match and is now eyeing an 18th Grand Slam title at Roland Garros.

During the third set, Djokovic seemed to be bothered by a spectator who had donned a Roger Federer cap. The No.1 seed shot an angry glare at the person after missing a point and shrugged off the incident by sending him a flying kiss. During the post-match interview, Djokovic talked about that moment and revealed that the spectator in the stands was his childhood friend.

“I sent him a kiss, was happy to see him there,” remarked Djokovic after the match.

The 2016 French Open champion won 74% of the points on his first serve and converted nine out the 11 breakpoint opportunities. Djokovic is attempting to become the first man in the Open Era to win each Grand Slam at least twice. Previously, Rod and Roy Emerson had achieved this historic feat.

Djokovic will play against Ricardas Berankis in the second round of the French Open. Berankis ousted Hugo Dellien 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the second round at Paris for the first time in his career. He is the only Lithuanian to enter the ATP top-50 rankings and had achieved a career-high ranking of No. 50 in 2016.

Novak holds a 2-0 lead against Berankis in their head-to-head matches. The duo last played in the Round of 32 at the Cincinnati Masters, where Djokovic defeated Berankis in straight sets.

In the same draw, Daniil Medvedev crashed out after losing in the opening round. He has now lost in the first round at the French Open for the fourth successive time.
