World Number one tennis player Novak Djokovic held a comfortable 6-1, 6-2 victory over Malek Jaziri in his first match at Dubai Tennis Championships 2020.  This year the Serb has won 16 matches in the singles and doubles circuit and has dropped zero matches in both the domains.

Speaking about Djokovic’s doubles ventures on the ATP Tour, during the Sunday’s press conference in Dubai, he revealed his notion to play professional doubles matches.

“Again, historically the tournaments where I play the most doubles were usually at Indian Wells, Dubai, Monte-Carlo, the first tournament of the clay season. Usually, when I have a bit of a break of several weeks. I start a new swing of tournaments, I would start also playing doubles as well,” he said.

“I feel like it’s a great way of preparing myself for the singles as well, having some match play. This tournament is going to be different because I’m going to start with singles and then play doubles later on,” Djokovic added.

For the Dubai event, he will be partnering 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic. “I’m glad to play with Marin. We never played together. We’ve been talking about it for years. I have serious intentions for doubles. I don’t play doubles very often. But when I do I like to try to play as best as I possibly can,” Novak continued.

Viktor Troicki is the one I would play with the most. I’m going to play with him in Indian Wells,” he shared.

During the Monte-Carlo Masters 2019, Djokovic teamed up with his brother Marko Djokovic. He usually engages himself in playing doubles tennis in non-Slam events and its not new to Djokovic. Also with the Tokyo Games 2020 being around the corner, the Serb will also be aiming a doubles Olympic medal for his nation.

“I don’t play much doubles. Dubai is one of the tournaments where I played a lot of doubles in the past. It’s not really surprising to myself that I wanted to be part of this tournament in doubles as well,” the Serb concluded.
