World No.1 Novak Djokovic is at the center of a raging controversy the US Open 2020. The tournament referee defaulted Djokovic when he smacked a spare ball that accidentally hit the lineswoman’s throat.

Despite the No.1 seed pleading for clemency, the tournament officials disqualified the Serb as per the rules. The accident sparked debate all over the tennis world, with most players backing the decision.

Djokovic exacerbated the situation by not going to the press conference after his match against Pablo Carreño Busta. The 17-time grand slam champion issued an apology on Instagram hours later and said that the entire situation has left him sad and empty.

Recently, the Serbian took to Twitter to express gratitude to his fans amidst receiving huge backlash for his actions. Djokovic reminded everyone that the linesperson needed our support as she did nothing wrong.

“Dear #NoleFam thank you for your positive messages. Please also remember the linesperson that was hit by the ball last night needs our community’s support too. She’s done nothing wrong at all. I ask you to stay especially supportive and caring to her during this time.” wrote Djokovic on the social networking site.

The USTA issued a statement that Djokovic forfeits the ranking points and will be fined $250,000 prize money he earned at the US Open 2020. Djokovic talked wrote about reflecting on the incident and helping him grow into a better human being.
