Novak Djokovic kept his hopes alive to become the first man to win all nine ATP Masters on tour, with a gritty win against David Goffin.
The Serbian came back from double break, 0-3 down in the decider to win 6-4 2-6 6-3 in the end. Djokovic has never won at Cincinnati and avoided another unusual exit from the tournament. Novak slammed his racquet thrice, and was eventually given a warning.
”It was a solid first set, but whatever happened in the next 45 minutes – I don’t want to remember it,” said the world number one.
”I wasn’t on the court. You know, I just lost the intensity and concentration. Luckily for me, I managed to bounce back, dig myself out of this hole I was in.”
Djokovic is set to take on Stan Wawrinka, who has been a difficult opponent for the Serb, defeating him in the French Open final earlier this year.
Wawrinka came back from a set down and needed three tie-breaks to wrap up the match against the ace machine Ivo Karlovic. Stan won 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5).
Also Tomas Berdych is set to meet Alexandr Dolgopolov as both won their respective matches.
Serena Williams too, looked in great shape, coming back from her shock defeat to Bencic last week, as she won her encounter comfortably.
The focus still remains on Novak Djokovic’s quest for Cincinnati and his blockbuster clash with Wawrinka.
