“Slovak Olympian Denisa Hurban Baránková has passed away at the age of 24 in tragic circumstances,” reads the statement.

The statement added, “World Archery joins the Slovak archery community in remembering Denisa, and offering condolences to her husband, Vladimir Hurban Jr., her family, friends, and teammates.”

According to Spravy, Baránková was struck by a vehicle, with a police investigation still ongoing. However, according to a police spokesperson, the driver of the vehicle wasn’t paying attention and crashed “into a parked vehicle”. Following that, the car then crossed “into a grassy area” where it hit “two people.” Paramedics were called to the scene and attended to Baránková and an 11-year-old girl, who was also hit.

The paramedics took the Olympian to the nearby University Hospital in Bratislava, while they took the young girl to the National Institute of Children’s Diseases. The girl is recovering from her injuries. However, the 2025 World Champion was in critical condition when she arrived. As per local reports, the 24-year-old had an “intracranial” injury and was put on artificial ventilation.

“A young woman was brought to us late in the evening after being hit by a car,” Eva Kliska, a spokesperson for the hospital, said, according to Spravy. “The patient was in a very critical condition, unconscious with multiple serious injuries.

“Despite the enormous efforts of our medical staff, unfortunately, the patient could not be saved and she succumbed to her injuries.”

It marks a tragic end to what was a promising career, especially after her recent success. Baránková had won the 2025 World Games in Chengdu. The 24-year-old earned her first major gold at her second World Games, becoming the first Slovak to do so. Not only that, when she qualified for the 2022 World Games, she became the first Slovak to do that as well.

The archer also represented her country at the 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympics, alongside appearances at the World Archery Championships and more. Her achievements meant that news of her passing reverberated far beyond Slovakia and drew tributes from across the sporting community.

Among those paying their respects was the International World Games Association, which issued a statement mourning the loss of one of the event’s most recent champions.

IWGA releases statement after Denisa Baránková’s death

2021 marked a tough year for Denisa Baránková, especially after she lost in a tiebreaker to Lisa Barbelin, which saw the latter secure her title. For the Slovakian, it meant that she had to settle for third place behind Barbelin and Karyna Dziominskaya. Not a bad result for a 19-year-old, and it marked the start of something special.

She had become the first Slovak archer ever to qualify for the World Games. However, things didn’t quite go according to plan as Baránková was eliminated in Round 2. She didn’t let that stop her, making a comeback to win the event three years later. It marked another record-breaking year for her before her tragic and untimely passing in June 2026.

“The International World Games Association (IWGA) is deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Denisa Hurban Baránková, gold medallist in Field Archery – Recurve at The World Games 2025 in Chengdu. She was 24 years old,” reads the statement.

“Denisa was one of the brightest talents in archery. A two-time Olympian and proud representative of Slovakia, she embodied the spirit of The World Games — excellence, passion, and dedication.”

It was a marvellous showcase of passion, excellence, and dedication as Denisa Baránková soared beyond defending champion Chiara Rebagliati. The Italian struggled to hit her marks, and despite rallying, she had to settle for a silver behind Baránková. It marked her first major gold medal, her first World Games medal, and her fifth career medal overall.

The statement added, “Her gold medal in Chengdu last August was a moment of pure brilliance that the entire The World Games family celebrated alongside her, and it will forever remain part of the legacy of TWG 2025. Her loss, under such sudden and tragic circumstances, has left the global sports community in shock and grief.”

For many, that gold medal in Chengdu will now stand as the defining image of Baránková’s career.
