“Yes! Yes! Yes!!!” As Gabby Thomas crossed the finish line at the 2023 US Championships, she couldn’t help but utter just one word, “Yes!” The dominant champion showcased her brilliance as she crossed her own best 200m time of 21.61 seconds with a sixth-best 21.60 (-0.4m/s). The win was made more special as she regained her momentum after a long recovery period from injury. And that traveled with her in the 2024 Olympics too.

In the Paris Summer Games, she ran a world-leading 21.78 seconds in the semifinals. Then, she won the gold medal in the 200m event, underscoring her elite form. This season, the reigning world silver medallist entered Eugene once again to check her performance. However, before the 200m events could start on Sunday, she entered her name in the 100m events. Running the preliminary rounds there, Thomas got an idea of her standing. There, fellow sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson posted a season‑best of 11.07s. But then came a bump for the T&F world.

First, Richardson announced that she will be withdrawing from the further rounds in the qualifying 100m race. Of course, she already has an automatic bid to the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo’s 100m event. While she earlier also stepped back from the 200m events, later, reporter Chris Chavez tweeted, “Sha’Carri Richardson WILL run the 200m at the USATF Outdoor Championships.” The updates of step backs didn’t end there either, as Thomas, too, had an update of her own.

Taking to X, track-and-field journalist Serenity Douglas stated, “Gabby Thomas is no longer listed for the 100m semi-finals, but she’s still set for the 200m that will be run on Sunday.”

Seemingly, every sprinting champion wanted to be on the USATF championships to treat it as a practice round. Richardson also probably thought of the same technique before Tokyo. Additionally, Noah Lyles also dropped his name from the event. Now, Thomas will be focusing on her 200m sprint despite having a record in the 100m sprint.

The other reason could, of course, be exhaustion. At a stacked meet like the USATF Championships, which includes multiple rounds across various sprint events, the schedule can be hectic. Dropping out of the 100m race may have freed Gabby Thomas from that commitment, giving her more time for preparation, recovery, and refining her race strategy, ultimately setting her up for a stronger performance in the 200m.

Although she hasn’t officially released any statement, it was expected that she would make such a move since last month. In a conversation on YouTube, Coach Rob singled out Gabby and Sha’Carri, stating that Gabby poses a bigger threat to Richardson.“Gabby, we know she’s already been showing it this year. Sha’Carri, we’re going off a past history because she didn’t just go to the world in 2023. She got a medal when she was there,” said Coach Rob.

In theory, her choice to forgo the 100m should benefit her 200m campaign. With fewer rounds to navigate in this tight schedule, she enters the 200m event with a fresher body and a game plan. With her consistency, Gabby remains the one to beat in this showdown. What are your thoughts on this decision? Share them with us in the comment section.
