The men’s golf event at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 had a captivating start. There were plenty of players who scored low in Round 1, which is an unusual thing on this course.

Currently, Austrian Sepp Straka leads the field with a score of -8. Moreover, prominent players like Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, and Justin Thomas had an ordinary start to the prestigious event.

Golf, as a sport, made a comeback at the Olympics in 2016. However, Rory McIlroy wasn’t part of it, as he seemed a bit skeptical about the prestigious event.

But this time it looks like he has changed his perspective and has good feelings about the Tokyo Olympics 2020 so far. In the post-round interview after round one, Rory McIlroy was asked about his feelings about the Olympics. And this is what he had to say,

“You know, I’ve never competed in Olympic games before. When you’re a competitor and an athlete and your sport is in the Olympics, you feel a part of something that’s bigger than yourself and something that’s, that’s bigger than your sport in general.

“If I’ve learned anything already this week, it’s that you feel like you’re a part of something bigger, which is a cool feeling.”

Rory McIlroy had a good start as he was -2 through four holes. He looked confident with his game until he dropped a shot on a par-4 6th hole.

The Irishman scored four birdies and two bogeys through 18 holes and remained T20 after Round 1. Apart from his driver, nothing seemed to have gone his way.

McIlroy had a frustrating round with his approach and putting game. Even though he managed to hit the greens most of the time, but he was way off pin location on almost every hole location. And this has been Rory’s problem for the last few weeks now since the 2021 U.S. Open.

How is the course playing?

The conditions in the morning are slightly easier, with greens being more stable due to the moisture. And the players who had a morning tee time took full advantage of it.

The greens on the course got quicker as the day progressed. But unfortunately, due to the constantly changing atmosphere, the greens kept changing their pace and made putting a strenuous job.

The roughs are diabolic as a player more often than not gets a flyer. So remaining in the fairways is imperative to get birdies.

However, a decent or a poor approach to the green won’t help either as the greens have variable speed, which makes long putts a headache.
