‘Really Wanted to Win It for My Dad’ – Xander Schauffele Gets Emotional After Winning Gold at Tokyo Olympics 2020

Xander Schauffele created history at Kasumigaseki Country Club. The American golfer won the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and secured a gold medal for his country. He became the second American to win gold in men’s golf at the Olympics games and won the gold medal in his first attempt at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
Schauffele maintained his top spot on the leaderboard since round 2. He scored 67 in the final round and remained -18 for the tournament to win the gold by just a stroke. Moreover, Slovakia’s Rory Sabbatini secured the silver medal by shooting a historic final round score of 61 and finished -17.
Xander was under pressure as he made a bogey on the 14th hole. However, he managed to keep calm and held his nerves till the final winning putt. Schauffele scored five birdies and a nerve-wracking bogey on the 14th hole in the final round. The main highlight of Xander’s play was his impeccable approach shots with irons and wedges. Hence, his few poor tee shots were recovered by his short irons and wedges.

Moreover, even with the lead on his side throughout the final round, he never went defensive with his approach. He kept attacking the pin locations even on the last tee with a driver in his hand to win the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

In the post-round interview, Xander Schauffele said that he wanted to win it for his dad. “You know, I really, really wanted to win it for my dad. I’m sure he’s crying somewhere right now. But yeah, I just, I kind of want this one more than the other one.”
