Girlfriend of International Gymnastics Star Fallen in Coma Makes Huge Medical Announcement: “New Phase”

“Thank you all for the love you are giving us in these difficult days, we are here in Germany to give it to Lorenzo. The situation is stable, but now a new and delicate phase awaits us,” wrote Gloria Bonicelli on July 28 in an Instagram post where she could be seen holding his hand fitted with an IV cannula. She was updating on her brother’s condition, a gymnastics star who had almost broken his neck at the FISU 2025 World University Games in the Rhine-Ruhr region.

The caption meant, “Today is a special day: Lorenzo is finally out of intensive care and has been transferred to the Spinal Unit of Niguarda Hospital.” Ghislanzoni Gal Sports Club of Lecco, where he trained as a youngster, also announced this a few days back.

The caption further read, “It’s the beginning of a new phase of this long journey, which we know will be challenging, but which we face with the same strength and determination that he teaches us every day.” While in Germany, he had surgery for a cervical sprain with subluxation of the fifth vertebra, and a tracheotomy was performed to assist his breathing.

Lisa gave a heartfelt thanks to everyone who dedicated a thought, a message of encouragement, or a word of support to Bonni, and concluded with a powerful message.

On August 7, when his situation stabilized, Bonececlli was transferred by air ambulance from the Essen University Hospital to the Niguarda Hospital in Milan, where he was admitted to the Neurointensive Care Unit. Earlier this month, Paolo Gilardoni, president of Ghislanzoni Gal, had a conversation with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera about the gymnastics star’s progress.

Lorenzo Bonicelli “can finally exchange a few words with those around him,” he shared.
