KJ Johnson’s journey with the LSU Tigers has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. As we stepped into 2024, whispers and speculation swirled through the gymnastics community about her conspicuous absence from the historic display at 101 Gym on 16th December 2024. For those who have followed the Tigers religiously, KJ’s presence on the mat has been as natural as breathing. Her powerful vaults and mesmerizing floor routines have become synonymous with LSU’s success. They say, ‘Sometimes the most intriguing stories in sports aren’t just about the performances we see, but the ones we don’t.’ The plot thickened when Coach Jay’s reactions sparked more questions than answers. But as with all great sports narratives, there’s always more beneath the surface.
This Thursday at LSU Sports, LSU Gymnastics coach Jay Clark expressed his views on Kay Johnson right after her return, saying, “KJ is so important to us. One of the things I’m talking about is that everybody’s role is important. KJ’s edge, personality, and ferocity in the way she does gymnastics are contagious when we get into competition. I don’t think there’s any question that when she landed the vault Friday night, it was largely responsible for the ensuing momentum we caught. I’d love for her to get going on floor; she’s close.” He also mentioned that he’s not sure how close he is to talking to Courtney about it, but coming back on an apparatus like Vault is definitely a bit easier. Trust us, things were a whole different ball game back then, when Jay shared some pretty ambiguous takes on KJ!
KJ Jo͏hns͏on had an amazing se͏ason last year, ͏but she’s been ͏MIA͏ from the team and posters this time around. And fans are buzzing about her absence ever since but LSU has remained tight-lipped since their opener against Iowa State on January 3rd. On January 20th, ͏Coach Clark said,“Nothing really to share more than I already have on either of those fronts… I haven’t gotten the full report from the medical people.” This wasn’t the news LS͏U fans were hoping ͏for, but t͏here͏ was still a͏ glimmer of͏ ͏hope. H͏e also adds “KJ is really, it’s going to depend on where her strength and where her comfort level is.” Jay did mention that KJ could have vaulted Fri͏day ͏night (January 17th). But͏ she was again faced an injury on the road to Oklahoma.
Also previously in the post Gym 101 press conference, Jay referred to KJ as an “internal matter.” When journalists brought her up, Jay Clark’s response wasn’t exactly what fans were hoping for. Rather he went on to say, “KJ’s an internal matter. I don’t have much to say on that.” But even with all that internal stuff, KJ came back and totally slayed with her performance.

With the crowd buzzing, Johnson stepped up to the͏ vault, marking her return after being on the sidelines.
