In a sudden and conspicuous move, Simone Biles, among the most celebrated figures in modern gymnastics, appears to have stepped back from the social platform X. Her account, once followed by nearly two million people, now returns nothing but an error screen. And the timing is no accident. It follows a heated public exchange with Riley Gaines, ignited by a high school softball photo and inflamed by broader tensions around trans inclusion in sport. But the question remains: why did Biles, who has never shied away from complex conversations, decide this moment required silence?
The origins of the episode trace back to a social media post involving a Minnesota girls’ softball team celebrating a championship win. When the school disabled comments on the image, Riley Gaines responded online with a remark, “Comments off lol.” Biles, observing the conversation, chose not only to engage but to direct pointed words at Gaines herself. “All of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser,” she wrote, referring to Gaines’ past races against trans swimmer Lia Thomas.

Biles did not stop at one message. In the days that followed, she leveled a series of sharply worded statements toward Gaines. “You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports… But instead… You bully them,” she wrote. Another post went further still, “One thing’s for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around!!!!!” At one point, Biles even added, “Bully someone your own size…” These responses, coming from an athlete known globally for discipline and restraint, marked a distinct turn toward confrontation.

However, as the days wore on and the pushback grew more intense, Biles shifted her tone. After several days without public comment, she returned with a softer message, “I wanted to follow up from my last tweets. I’ve always believed competitive equity & inclusivity are both essential in sport.” This attempt to balance two deeply contested values, fairness and inclusion, stood in contrast to her earlier, more forceful interventions. Then, without further explanation, her account vanished. No announcement. No closing remarks. Only the void left behind.
Biles’s decision to leave the platform suggests a confluence of factors. Unrelenting criticism, the challenges of sustaining civil discourse online, and perhaps the toll of representing both personal belief and public responsibility. While her statements came as a defense towards the teenage athlete, they also invited scrutiny that extended beyond debate. Whether she returns to the forum remains uncertain, but the silence itself conveys its own meaning.
