Cartoon Network Pays Tribute to Tokyo Olympics Trailblazers Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles

Since the start of July, sports enthusiasts across the globe have been waiting for the Tokyo Olympics to begin. It was always going to be an uphill battle for IOC and the hosting nation, especially considering how the locals in Tokyo were not too keen on organizing the quadrennial showpiece amidst an ongoing pandemic.

But one week into the Olympics and the journey has been nothing short of a Christopher Nolan thriller. Two athletes who have been in the headlines this month are Japanese tennis star, Naomi Osaka and Team USA gymnast Simone Biles.

Naomi was bestowed with the honour of lighting the Olympic Flame at the opening ceremony on July 23, 2021. Meanwhile, Simone created major shockwaves when she decided against participating in the team and all-around finals.

After the events of recent weeks, both Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles have been flooded with messages of optimism and support. Both these athletes are at the top of their game but faced considerable backlash from the media for their off-field issues.

However, they’ve managed to stay strong in the face of adversity and keep their heads high. Popular children’s entertainment channel, Cartoon Network, was the latest entity to pay tribute to these two stalwarts.

Cartoon Network released the above animation on Twitter. A representation of Naomi and Simone can be seen dressed as Powerpuff Girls characters. The show is a big hit amongst young girls who look at the three protagonists as reel-life role models.

It serves as an important reminder for young and aspiring female athletes across the globe who will one day represent their own nations at a global level. This is not the first or the last time that these two athletes will be in the news this Summer. Keep an eye on this space for more.
