What was intended as a showcase of emerging talent at the 2026 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup instead erupted into controversy. Ukraine’s Taisiia Onofriichuk etched her name in history with four golds, all-around and all three apparatus finals, but attention swiftly turned to the hoop final’s medal ceremony. There, a 15-year-old athlete competing under neutral status sparked outrage from the Ukrainian Gymnastics Federation.

On March 30, Onofriichuk won gold, Sofia Ilteryakova (competing neutral – not officially representing Russia) won silver, and Sofia Raffaeli of Italy won bronze in the Apparatus Finals Hoop. But in the medal ceremony, when the Ukrainian flag was flown, and the anthem was played for the winner, Ilteryakova, who stood on the podium, silver medal around her neck, turned her back to the flags and anthem instead of facing them.

And seeing all this happening, the Ukrainian Gymnastics Federation instantly called the gymnast’s actions disrespectful to Ukraine’s state symbols and demanded that the Russian athlete be stripped of her status. In an official statement, the UGF said:

“The Ukrainian Gymnastics Federation expresses its strong protest over the unacceptable behavior of the Russian gymnast, who competed under neutral status,” the statement reads. “This gesture is a direct violation of the rules of conduct at official ceremonies and the principle of ‘sport outside of politics,’ which is often used as a cover for the return of Russian athletes.”

The federation said it was an act of passive aggression towards the Ukrainian team, who train and perform under pressure because of the war. It stressed that the action was not about the individual, but about the political backdrop.

They also announced it would file a formal complaint with the Ethics Commission demanding that Ilteryakova’s results be annulled, her neutral status be withdrawn, and additional measures be taken to ensure that athletes respect the national symbols of the nations represented. While the UGF pushed for action, the limelight immediately turned to the Russian team, where the head coach stepped forward to defend her athlete.

Defended by the coach as World Gymnastics launches a review

Tatyana Sergaeva defended Ilteriakova, telling TASS, “Sofia Ilteriakova is competing in a World Cup stage for the first time and is a debutant at this level. This season, she moved up from the junior to the senior category and is immediately competing in one of the most competitive stages of the series. During the awards ceremony, Sofia might have felt a little flustered – for an athlete competing at this level for the first time, this is completely natural.”

Ilteryakova first gained attention last year as a junior, winning the all-around title at the Cup of the Strongest Athletes of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus. In her senior international debut at the 2026 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup, she claimed silver in the hoop final with a score of 29.700, her first major senior podium. But her achievement soon faced scrutiny from the World Gymnastics body.

As of April 1, World Gymnastics confirmed it is reviewing the incident. In an official statement, the federation said, “World Gymnastics acknowledges the incident involving athlete Sofia Ilteriakova during the awards ceremony for the finalists of the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup in Sofia. The case is currently under review, and all relevant information is being thoroughly assessed. Further steps will be considered in accordance with applicable rules and established procedures. Due to the ongoing process, no further comment will be made at this stage.”

The international review now leaves the gymnastics world waiting to see how the rules for neutral athletes might change in the future.
