This year’s Tokyo Olympics 2020 has been shrouded in controversy. Athletes are being sent home on a weekly basis days before their event after returning positive COVID-19 results, no spectators in stadiums – these are just some of the discrepancies in this year’s Summer Games in Japan.

Of course, one must understand that the organizers are under immense duress to adhere to strict regulations due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. But Dutch cyclist Anna Van der Breggen endured a traumatizing experience on Tuesday while practicing for her upcoming Olympic event.

Her training was disrupted on Tuesday when she was pulled from her bike by officials while running trials at the Fuji International Speedway. A video posted on Twitter by Japanese cycling coach Kyosuke Takei showed several riders waiting outside the circuit. Van der Breggen was also seen on video off her bike talking to officials.

Japanese coach Kyosuke Takei lashes out at Tokyo Olympics organizers

Speaking to the press after Tuesday’s incident, Takei did not hold back on his opinion of how the Olympics have been handled thus far.

“Everyone had to stop because of an error by the organizers. In the turmoil with the guards, Anna was threatened and pulled down.”

“It was a big mess today at the final training of the time trial. It was sad what happened. The organizers have no respect for the riders. I understand that everyone is trying to do their best in their position, but this was very confusing. I haven’t seen anything like that in a long time,” Takei told Wielerflits.

While Anna did not endure any physical injuries during the altercation, this will surely not do the Olympics any good from a PR perspective. Especially with all the issues surrounding this year’s Summer Games, it seems like any negative press will only do more harm than good.

It remains to be seen if Olympic officials address this issue. But Anna will look to put this behind and channel all this energy for her upcoming Olympic final. More power to her!
