Ryan Nyquist Talks Up Tokyo Olympics Starlet and BMX Prodigy Hannah Roberts

It is not often that the sport of BMX is at the center of conversations amidst a Summer Olympics tournament. The spotlight is usually on events such as wrestling, boxing, football and basketball, amongst others. But the arrival of American BMX prodigy, Hannah Roberts, has given the cult sport some much-needed publicity.

The 19-year old starlet will be representing the BMX Freestyle USA team at the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020-21. Roberts was the first American to qualify in the BMX freestyle event for this year’s Summer Olympics. Since winning the FISE World Series 2017 in Chengdu, China, Hannah Roberts has gone on to establish herself as a global icon in the BMX community. Her coach Ryan Nyquist is in awe of his star student. He expects her to shatter records and turn heads at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics 20-21.

“Hannah Roberts is an amazing competitor, amazing background, amazing human being actually. She’s just got the best heart. She’s super polite, super just well mannered. But on the bike, she is a total beast. I mean, she is just a force. And it’s an amazing thing to be able to coach an athlete like that because she is self motivated.”

“She’s very good at setting goals for herself. And the great thing for her, which is really exciting is you know, usually when she learns a trick, it’s pretty much the first time any woman has ever done that trick on a bicycle. So that in itself is just exciting to be a part of,” Nyquist said in the above video.

Roberts participated in her first competitive BMX competition in 2012 at the tender age of 11. She became World Champion at the age of 16 and will participate in her first Olympics at 19. Not bad at all for a young starry-eyed girl from Indiana? Keep an eye on her in the coming weeks.
