Eileen Gu‘s campaign at the 2026 Winter Olympics was incredible to say the least, as she finished with a total of three medals. However, Gu has come under constant scrutiny for competing at the Olympics as a Chinese athlete despite being born and raised in the USA. Having been called out for her move on numerous occasions already, she has now been brutally slammed by American journalist Megyn Kelly for deciding to ski under the Chinese flag.

Gu has become quite a controversial figure in the USA ever since deciding to represent China in international competitions in 2019. Now Megyn Kelly has had something to say to Gu as well.
“Eileen Gu was born in America to, I think, an American father and a Chinese mother. She was raised here. She went to Stanford. She had this privileged upbringing in San Francisco, with all the gifts. She becomes a world-class skier. And then, because she got a big fat check from China—she claims it was to inspire young Chinese athletes—she decided to ski in the Olympics under the Chinese flag,” Megyn said in a YouTube video.
“She gets all the advantages of being an American. She gets all the support from her fellow Americans. She gets an education at an American university, one of our most prestigious. And then she flies the coop to go compete for China, where she reportedly got a check. So, that’s Eileen Gu’s values,” she continued.
Megyn then aimed at Gu for her behavior during a press conference that was held after Gu had clinched silver in the women’s big air event. A few aspects of Gu’s behavior there apparently didn’t make a good impression on Kelly.
“Oh my god, she is stomach-turning – the self-aggrandizing, the self-flattery, the sneering ‘I’m the best. You will love me.’ Enjoy China, okay? Goodbye. We don’t care. We don’t want you. I am so glad you are enjoying your silver. By the way, I don’t think China is going to be happy with that. Hate to break it to you, they are kind of prone to demands for excellence,” Megyn further said.
But what did Gu even say that made Megyn Kelly feel this way?
When asked if she sees her two Olympic silvers as two goals lost, Gu said, “I’m the most decorated free skier, female free skier, in history. I think that’s an answer in and of itself.” She even added, “I’m doing things that quite literally have never been done before, and so I think that is more than good enough.”
What only adds fuel to the fire is the fact that Gu honed her skiing skills in the USA and had been trained under top coaches who helped her become the athlete that she is today.

In fact, Gu had begun her professional skiing career as a competitor for Team USA. She was a member of the team during the 2018-19 freestyle ski World Cup season.
Gu was expected to continue representing the USA internationally, but she surprisingly decided to request a change of nationality with the International Ski Federation. The change was granted, and the skier entered the 2019-20 Freestyle Ski World Cup as a Chinese athlete, enraging a horde of Americans.
Though Eileen’s critics have been relentless, she has not let them affect her performance one bit. She continued to set even more milestones during the 2026 Winter Olympics, and it will be very difficult for any freestyle skier in the future to match or better her achievements at the grandest stage of them all.
Eileen Gu achieves major success at Milan Cortina
Having won three medals, including two golds and a silver at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, Gu continued to rack up medals in the next edition as well. Her first medal came in the women’s slopestyle event, where she ended up finishing second and took home silver. The big air event also proved to be a success for the skier as she won her second silver of the campaign, taking her Olympic tally to five medals. However, she had indeed saved the best for last.
Gu concluded her campaign on a high note and clinched gold in the women’s halfpipe event. This made her the most successful freestyle skier in the history of the Olympics. This performance was a fitting reply to all her critics and saw her have the last laugh over them. She has not let the pressure take a toll on her and deserves to be commended for her resilience.
While Gu may come off as complacent at times, she very well knows how to walk the walk. Despite being subjected to criticism on a regular basis, she is an inspiration for many young skiers around the world. And with her still being just 22, the sky is the limit.
