The women’s épée competition kicked off with two round of 64 matches, with Singapore’s Tikanah Abdul Rehman and Russia’s Aizanat Murtazaeva qualifying. The round of 32 kicked off with the Russian Aizanat beating Korean fencer Choi In-jeong. It ended with a cracking battle between world #1 Ana Maria Popescu and Singapore’s Tikanah. Despite a spirited attempt, the world #1 triumphed over Tikanah.

In the women’s round of 16, we witnessed a China vs China match between Yiwen Sun and Minghye Zhu. Sun triumphed and absolutely shredded the rest of the field. We’ll get to that later, but another round of 16 match received a ton of attention. Russia’s Aizanat Murtazaeva took out US’ Kelley Hurley, leaving the US utterly hapless in another event.

In shocking fashion, the Rio 2016 gold medalist fell to Yiwen Sun in a wonderfully entertaining bout. However, she adds a silver medal to her tally of international accolades. It’s ironic that Sun, the Rio silver medalist, won gold, but it was the perfect way to cap off a day of fencing.
