Day 1 of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 matches had an intense start with world champions competing for medals around diverse events. Olympians competed in 7 sports at the most awaited mega-quadrennial games.

Olympians started their medal conquest in seven Olympic sports today. Archery, shooting, cycling, fencing, judo, taekwondo, and weightlifting held the victory ceremonies today. 28 countries won medals today, portraying the diversity in the Olympic games.

China leading the medal tally at Tokyo Olympics 2020

One of the Olympic powerhouses China had a stellar run on day 1. After being away from the world championships because of the pandemic, China is back at the mega-quadrennial games.

The Chinese 10m air rifle women’s shooter was the first athlete to win the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo. Yang Qian secured the gold defeating strong contenders from ROC, USA, Switzerland, South Korea, and Germany.

The gold medal rush continued as China won the gold medal in the weightlifting and fencing events as well. Adding to the tally, the nation also secured the bronze medal in the 10m air pistol men’s event.

Following China, Italy secured the second position in the medal tally. Italian athletes secured the gold medal in the taekwondo men’s 58kg event, and silver in the fencing men’s individual event.

The host country, Japan finished in the third position in the medal tally. Japanese athletes bagged two medals in judo, a gold medal in men’s 60kg and a silver medal in women’s 48kg event.
