Isabell Werth proved why she is the greatest of all time at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Her performance in the Dressage Grand Prix Special lifted Germany to a gold medal. This was her second consecutive gold medal in team dressage, but her performance deserves more plaudits.

Along with Bella Rose 2, the German legend performed an impeccable set which earned her a whopping 83.298%. This was the second highest score in the team dressage Grand Prix Special until her teammate shattered that record. Jessica von Bredow-Werndl registered an ungodly performance with a magnificent 84.666%.

While she might’ve outscored Werth, her performance lacked an iconic soundtrack. Isabell Werth’s choice of Beethoven’s 9th and excerpts from Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, Beethoven’s 5th, and Verdi’s Rigoletto created the perfect soundtrack for dressage.

The music fit the performance so well, proving that Werth is worth the world #1 ranking in dressage. Although that spot will come under attack by her teammate Jessica von Bredow-Werndl, this Olympic gold sets her a class apart from every other equestrian athlete on the planet.

We cannot move on without giving credit to Dorothee Schreiber, who also claims her second consecutive gold medal in team dressage. However, her accomplishments pale in comparison to Werth, the greatest dressage rider in equestrian history.

What makes Werth the greatest of all time?

Werth didn’t have the strongest performance at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. But why is she still the best in the world? Overtaken by her younger compatriot Jessica von Bredow-Werndl, does she still hold the tag of being the greatest athlete dressage has ever seen?

Well, 41 gold medals in equestrian competitions prove her wrong. With an astounding twelve Olympic medals; eight gold and four silver, Isabell Werth is the most decorated athlete in Olympic equestrian. We can say she is the Michael Phelps of the equestrian world. While the likes of Charlotte Dujardin and Steffen Peters are some of the best in the world, they don’t hold a candle to Isabell Werth.

The gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 is the twelfth medal in her Olympic tally, but she isn’t done yet. She qualified for the individual dressage Grand Prix Special as well, which takes place tomorrow at Tokyo’s Equestrian Park. Will she add another gold to her tally, or will we witness a historic upset tomorrow?
