Everything You Need to Know About the Rowing and Canoeing Venue at Tokyo Olympics 2020

The Tokyo Olympics 2020 is right around the corner. The games begin this weekend and rowing will be one of the first events to commence. There is always tremendous excitement about this water sport, and here’s everything you need to know about the venue that will be hosting rowing and canoeing events at Tokyo Olympics 2020. 

The Olympic rowing and canoeing events will take place at the Sea Forest Waterway in central Tokyo. This venue was specially built for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and was inaugurated in 2019 after which it hosted the 2019 World Rowing Junior Championships and the 2021 Asia and Oceania Continental Qualification Regatta.

The Sea Forest Waterway was built on the waterfront side and is separated from Tokyo bay by two dams. The course is  2,335 meters long and 198 meters wide in which there are eight lanes each stretching 12.5 meters wide. 

The Sea Forest Waterway is a beautiful venue and the only Japanese rowing venue that meets International standards. Hence, it becomes crucial to maintain the waterway even after the conclusion of the Olympics.

The waterway is surrounded by scenic buildings and bridges with the most famous being the Tokyo Gate Bridge which stands more than 87 meters high. Additionally, the Umi no mori Ohashi Bridge also spans the entire width of the course which would make for an excellent visual attraction. 

The construction began in 2016 with the main emphasis on the athlete facilities and the wave attenuation since it is surrounded by Tokyo Bay. The 2019 Junior Rowing Championships was the inaugural event to take place at this venue.

There are a total of 14 medal events in rowing at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. There are eight events each for men and women, and these events will take place at the Sea Forest Waterway from July 23-30 consisting of more than 500 competitors.
