In just over a decade on the international stage, Ariarne Titmus transformed women’s middle-distance freestyle swimming. Taking on the greats and emerging as one of the most decorated swimmers of her generation, the Australian not only conquered the pool but also inspired a new wave of swimmers across the globe. However, the 25-year-old will not return to the pool, as she announced her retirement from competitive swimming. Following this, many of her fellow swimmers, including Katie Ledecky and Summer McIntosh, took a moment to bid an emotional farewell to Titmus.

On October 15, Titmus took to Instagram to pen a heartfelt post to her younger self, announcing her retirement. She said, “A really tough one. But one that I’m really happy with.” Swimming has been her passion ever since she was a little girl. But a year-long hiatus from the sport made her realize that there are some things that are more important to her now.
Titmus claimed that she always intended to return after the 2024 Paris Olympics. She said, “I never thought that Paris would be my last Olympic Games. And knowing now what I know I wish I had maybe enjoyed that last race a little bit more.” The 12 months away from swimming gave her a chance to explore things beyond the competition. She confessed, “I’ve really had the chance to explore what life is like without swimming and that was always my intention.”

Soon after she announced her retirement, World Aquatics commented, “An amazing career, thank you for everything 💛💚.” But moving to the comments section revealed the burst of wishes from her fellow swimmers.

Swimmers pour their hearts out at Ariarne Titmus’ announcement
The Australian’s swimming rival, Katie Ledecky, took to the comments and added, “An outstanding competitor, champion and person! 👏🏼❤️Congratulations.” Titmus famously rose to global prominence at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics where she defeated Ledecky in an epic battle of women’s 400m race. Interestingly, at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Titmus won the women’s 400m freestyle to defend her title in a highly hyped race against Katie Ledecky and Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh.
Sharing her best wishes to Titmus, Summer McIntosh, penned, “Congratulations on an incredible career and all the very best in your next chapter! You will be missed!❤️❤️” Well, retirement is a seriously huge step forward in a sportsperson’s life. And the kind of confidence Ariarne Titmus showcased in the video garnered pride from her friend and fellow Olympic and World Champion, Kyle Chalmers. The sprint freestyle specialist commented, “I’m so proud of you! You are a legend in and out of the pool. You’ve inspired me so much over the years and I am honoured to call you my friend!! All the best with the next chapter of life. 🩷”
Jessica Fox, Titmus’ teammate for the Tokyo Olympics and the Paris Olympic,s penned, “💛 so proud of you! Congratulations on everything you’ve achieved. It was such a privilege to watch you race, to be Olympic teammates with you, and even more to become friends. Enjoy it all 😘.”

Soon, Biranna Throssell, a fellow Olympic gold medalist who opted for retirement and moved to the corporate world, joined the list in the comments. She stated, “What a career 🤍 you’ve carried a nation, inspired a generation and done it all with such grace and heart. Your legacy will echo for years!!! So proud of everything you have achieved and to have been a little part of your journey 🥰 thank you roomie 🤍.”
Although Titmus bid goodbye to competitive swimming, she’s excited to explore the opportunities ahead, in broadcasting avenues, and to give back to the sport that she loves.
