Colorado State Rams’ shot put coach Brian Bedard recalled in a press conference, “I didn’t actually recruit Mya out of high school. I was asleep at the wheel. I get a call from this guy named Brock. It left a message on my answering machine. ‘This is Brock Lesnar, and my daughter’s a pretty good thrower out of Minnesota.’” Now, Brock Lesnar is not a name you would easily miss, but Brian did. He was not a fan of WWE. Fortunately, a staffer named Brandon did know who the beast was and quickly googled Mya’s name to realize that she was the Minnesota state champion thrower. Bedard called Brock back to let him know that he was interested. “Brock actually recruited me,” he joked. That is the story of how Mya ended up at the Rams, and now, when it’s time to say goodbye, she has a few things to say. What is that?

Forever a RAM 💚Just like that, my CSU chapter comes to a close. This journey has been full of challenges, growth, and unforgettable moments—and I’m so thankful for it all. From day one, I gave this sport everything I had. Becoming a 2x national champion in the shot put didn’t come easy, but every rep, every setback, and every breakthrough was worth it,” read the caption of a post of the daughter of ‘The Beast Incarnate’, Brock Lesnar: 2-time national champion Mya Lesnar. On June 12, she donned the dark forest green sleeveless CSU singlet and the black compression tights for one last time in the 2025 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

She further wrote, “I’m beyond grateful for the support of my teammates, coaches, family, and friends. Huge thank you to @throwing_smarter, your belief in me and constant support meant the world. Closing this chapter proud of what I’ve accomplished—and fired up for what’s next. New goals. New levels. New memories. Let’s go!” The tag, of course, was for the Colorado State Rams’ shot put coach, Brian Bedard himself. Just so you know how good the man is, the program has produced six national champions under his tenure. The legacy stretches back to 1998, when Casey Malone won it all in the discus while Bedard was still an assistant.

She had also thanked her family in a post, and she even posted a picture of herself talking with her father, Brock Lesnar, who was present in the stands on June 12. She credits him as the biggest influence on her career, instilling foundational values like hard work and dedication. After her Indoor NCAA win, he advised her, “Take it all in, enjoy it. And then, you know, put it away. And, you know, we move on.” The former UFC Heavyweight and NCAA Division I Wrestling Champion knows how not to let victories affect them as such.

Now, Brock Lesnar, being the brand he is, does bring a lot of attention to Mya being his daughter. That’s what she wanted to break away from. She did not want to be restricted as Brock Lesnar’s daughter, but also as Mya Lesnar. After her NCAA career, she just might have.

Behind Mya Lesnar’s historic feat

Mya Lesnar arrived at Colorado State after transferring from Arizona State and immediately made her mark indoors. In the 2023–24 indoor season, she shattered the Mountain West indoor shot put record with a 19.10 m throw and then claimed the NCAA Indoor Shot Put National Championship with an 18.53 m effort—the first women’s indoor field title in CSU history. She carried that momentum outdoors, winning the 2024 Mountain West Outdoor shot put crown with a personal best of 19.08 m and earning the conference’s Female Athlete of the Year honor.

What’s your perspective on:

Did Mya Lesnar finally step out of Brock's shadow, or is she still 'the Beast's daughter'?

Have an interesting take?

In her senior season, on May 3, 2025, she launched a 19.60 m throw at the Doug Max Invitational—breaking both the CSU program and facility record. A month later, at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 12, 2025, she opened with a 19.01 m throw to capture her second national title and secure CSU’s first outdoor event crown since 2005. By the end of her NCAA career, Mya was a two‑time national champion, a four‑time Mountain West shot put champion, and a multiple‑event conference titleholder .

She leaves Colorado State as the program record‑holder in both indoor and outdoor shot put and as one of the top collegiate throwers ever. What are your thoughts on her NCAA career? Also, do let us know your opinions on her future as well.
