Bad form continues for Christian Coleman. To start with, he did not qualify for the Worlds at the USATF championships. In the 100m, he had one of the best athletes of this season, Kenny Bednarek, who clocked 9.79, while Coleman clocked 9.86s to finish 5th. Then there was the 200m, where his indoor rival, Noah Lyles, outran him and all in 19.63s. Coleman was 6th in that race with a time of 20.02s.
And then he announced that he was coming to the Brussels Diamond League. Now, the good thing here for Coleman was that nobody else showed. No Kenny, No Noah, No Courtney Lindsey, or T’Mars McCallum to outrun him. Yet a European stood in his way.
Christian Coleman was lined up alongside Alexander Ogando, Udodi Onwuzurike, his countrymen Joseph Fahnbulleh, Robert Gregory, and Kyree King in the 200m event today at the Brussels Diamond League. Not big names, yet, none to be taken lightly. The 60m world record holder was a bullet out of the gun when the bang echoed in the stadium, and he was quick on the curve as well. For a moment, fans might have thought that this was it, but then he started to fade in the final few meters, as the Europeans ran past.

Alexander Ogando of the Dominican Republic won the men’s 200m today, clocking 20.16 s (–0.3) on the clock. The only American to make the podium was Robert Gregory, finishing second with 20.19s, while Udodi Onwuzurike from Nigeria claimed third in 20.29s. Coleman, who once looked like he would be on the podium today, slipped to number 4, clocking 20.42s.

This is one of those seasons that Coleman would love to put back in the past. Not a single win, the chances of making it to the world championships are sinking with every step he takes on the track. It’s tough times for the 29-year-old, and he sure has addressed it.

Christian Coleman reflected after the USATF
Coleman’s only victory this season has been in the 4×100 relay at the Tom Jones Memorial; since then, he has not crossed the finish line first in any single event. Reflecting on his season, he wrote in an Instagram post, “Through it all, never made excuses. Never complained about circumstances. Never looked at obstacles, just opportunity. Just went to work and still showed up as me..one of the best ever.” Plus, this is also the time when Sha’Carri got arrested for her fight with Coleman at the Seattle airport.

He continued, “My breakthrough this season didn’t earn me top 3 at trials but personally it let me know I’m right where I need to be. I have so much more to give this sport, and I feel like I’m just getting started! God is the greatest!!🙏🏾Im living proof🧘🏾♂️!!” While he indicated the power he has left within, races after this message have not been that good, either.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Christian Coleman losing his edge, or are the new challengers just too strong for him?
Have an interesting take?
In Silesia, he was quick but 4th in 9.96s. Kenny Bendraek took 3rd position by a bare millisecond. Now, almost the same result today, other than the time. Coleamn’s next stop is the Diamond League Final in Zurich. A win there and the gates to World Champions open up. Can he do it?
